Let Go of the Past

A low self esteem could begin way back in childhood when children are made to believe that they are worthless. Their self confidence is eroded and they succumb to the idea that they can never achieve success in anything that they do. They were picked on, laughed at, pushed around, called ugly names, and treated with disdain. No wonder they grew up to be full of resentment.

If that was your experience, it is time you cut yourself loose from that mindset and do self esteem improvement. Start reading about the life of successful persons and you will soon discover that many of them had such low self esteem that they could not even complete an elementary education.

Many decided to override their low self esteem and improve their attitude, whatever it took. They became some of the greatest men and women that ever lived.

Low self esteem has never helped anyone else and it sure will not help you. It can only drive you into depression, anger, grudge, fear and all the other evils that it generates.

Re-program your thinking and control your state of mind. You must believe that you are worth much more than you think or you will remain at the foot of the ladder and never make an attempt to climb it.

Do not waste your life away with feelings of inadequacies. Instead, think of ways to go about self esteem improvement. Success is yours, just reach out and grasp it.

I often find it amazing how my mental health, and my way of thinking on a particular day, end up effecting my productivity in all angles of work – self esteem is obviously a big part of this.

I like your advice on letting go of the past – in my experience the past is something that frequently drags people down (myself included). What do you think is the main culprit behind low self esteem/mental health?

Thank Chris, happy that my article was of some relevance to you.

Generally speaking I believe the main culprit behind low self esteem/mental health is past authoritative abuse – meaning as a child you have a parent/guardian or someone around you who was always putting you down telling you that you will never amount to anything, you are lazy, you are ugly or you are not good enough.  All these leads to self doubt and intimation of expressing ones self.

This could also stem from being in an abusive relationship whether physical, verbal or mental.  This reduces the person’s self confidence and self esteem sometimes to point of a nervous breakdown.

One of the most important things you said is to let go of the past.  I know in some cases that is easier said than done but honestly and speaking from experience that is a big step that will help greatly.  It is even okay to get medical advice and help as low self esteem can be very detrimental to your health.  Thank you for writing this.  It can help a lot of people who are suffering from low self esteem.

A healthy self esteem is very important as it plays a major role in one’s success or failure.

I agree with what you said that a low self esteem could be traced back from childhood. I have a cousin who was always told by her parents when she was just around 10 or 11 that she’s dumb, lazy, and will never be successful. I didn’t understand then what that experience was doing to her until our high school years when I noticed how timid and reserved she was. Thankfully, she got better after a few sessions of counseling and after her parents apologized to her for the way they treated her.

That is so true, I was a victim of that also, grew up with a stepmother who was very abusive verbally.  Thank God I got help.

Being proud of one’s self in all ways and stepping out with confidence soeaks of a high self esteem. When you have the carriage and the jcourage to speak to an audience, then you have it all. As against some low esteem indicatirs which includes wanting to stay lonely, avoiding speaking where people are, wanting to please everybody, not able to take decisios, high self esteem makes you to want to air your opinion at all times, you want to be around people,.

High self esteem enanles you achieve your dreams.
